Glass, ceramics, iron-free aluminium and aluminium salts, manufacture of activated aluminium, base for organic lakes, flame retardants, mattress batting. Finely divided form (0.1 - 0.6 microns) used for rubber reinforcing agent, paper coating, filler, cosmetics.

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

May cause mild irritation.

Eye

Can cause mild irritation, especially when wet.

Skin

May cause mild irritation.

Inhaled

May cause mild upper respiratory tract irritation.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause asthma, chronic lung disease and skin rashes.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Do not induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to a convulsing or unconscious person. If swallowed, dilute by drinking large amounts of water. Consult a physician.

Eye

Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Consult a physician.

Skin

Wash with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Consult a physician if irritation persists.

Inhaled

Remove to fresh air. Check for clear airway, breathing and presence of pulse. Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation for persons without pulse or respirations. Consult a physician.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE


3.1 Exposure Standards

If used in a manner that could generate particulates (dust) it is recommended that the dust be treated as a NUISANCE PARTICULATE according to the ACGIH with a TLV-TWA of 10 mg/m3 total dust.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Ensure good ventilation/exhaust at the workplace. Prevent formation of dust.

3.3 Personal Protection

Eye protection - wear safety glasses. Skin protection - wear impervious gloves. Respiratory protection - use suitable respiratory protective device in case of insufficient ventilation. Short term filter device : Filter NIOSH N95.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean up personnel should wear full protective gear. Ensure adequate ventilation.

Non-hazardous material. Sweep into container and hold for waste disposal.

Disposal

Collect in containers, bags or covered dumpster boxes. If reuse or recycling is not possible, material may be disposed of at an industrial landfill. Uncleaned packagings - disposal must be made according to official regulations.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

When exposed to fire or heat, aluminium trihydroxide decomposes forming aluminium oxide and water vapour beginning at 200 deg C.

Extinguishing Media

Use media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions. Fire fighters should wear self-contained respiratory protective device and a fully protective suit.
